Fort Rotterdam dibangun di atas lokasi Benteng Ujung Pandang, salah satu benteng miliki Kerajaan Gowa-Tallo. Pada tahun 1634, pecah perang antara Kerajaan Gowa-Tallo dan Dutch East India Company (VOC). Pada tahun 1667, Benteng Ujung Pandang diserahkan ke Belanda di bawah Perjanjian Bungaya, menyusul kekalahan Kesultanan Gowa. Kemudian atas inisiatif Cornelis Speelman dihancurkan dan dibangun kembali dengan arsitektur colonial Belanda. Kini Fort Rotterdam digunakan sebagai Museum dan pusat berbagai kegiataan kebudayaan. Fort Rotterdam terletak di Jl. Ujung Pandang, buka setiap hari dari pukul 09.00 WITA – 18.00 WITA, tanpa biaya masuk. Fort Rotterdam was built on the location of Fort Ujung Pandang, one of the forts belonged to Gowa-Tallo Kingdom. A fight over spice trade between Gowa-Tallo Kingdom and Dutch East India Company (VOC) caused a war in 1634. In 1667 Fort Ujung Pandang was ceded to the Dutch as part of the Treaty of Bongaya, after the defeat of the Sultanate of Gowa in the war. It was later rebuilt with Dutch colonial architecture on the initiative of Cornelis Speelman, a Dutch Admiral, given the name of Fort Rotterdam after his place of birth. Today, Fort Rotterdam is used as museum and venue for various cultural events. Fort Rotterdam in on Jl. Ujung Pandang, it opens everyday from 9 AM – 6 PM, free of charge.
